Born in Canada to a mother affected by Element Zero in Singapore during his gestation, Kaidan developed the ability to manipulate dark energy. He attended Biotic Acclimatization and Temperance Training (BAaT), nicknamed "brain camp," where he received L2 implants that enable his biotic skills but cause frequent migraines. In gameplay terms, he functions as a Sentinel, combining technology and biotics to create mass effect fields. His visual design was overhauled for Mass Effect 3 with a blue-and-white armor theme to reflect his readiness for the galaxy's biggest war, modeled after Luciano Costa. Cut content from the original game files revealed voice-acted lines suggesting same-sex romance options were technically present but never intended by developers, a fact clarified by project director Mac Walters in 2021.

In Their Own Story

Kaidan first accompanies Commander Shepard to Eden Prime, recommending Ashley Williams for the crew after their encounter. On Virmire, he faces a choice to save himself or sacrifice his life; if saved, he expresses survivor's guilt over Ashley's death. Two years later on Horizon, he confronts Shepard with anger regarding her alliance with Cerberus, refusing to join the new Normandy until sending an apology message later. In Mass Effect 3, he appears in Vancouver before the Reaper attack, joining a mission to Mars where he is critically injured by a Cerberus mech. While recovering on the Citadel, Ambassador Udina offers him a Spectre role. Later, during a confrontation with Udina regarding betrayal, Kaidan may be forced into combat against Shepard unless convinced of Udina's guilt. Depending on war assets and player choices, he either dies at the Conduit or survives to place a plaque on the Normandy memorial wall.
